GOOD TO KNOW before travelling to the DR

Useful tips and advice you should know before travelling to the Dominican Republic! Sharing recommendations based on personal experiences

You’ve always wanted to travel to the Dominican Republic and are finally ready to take that first step ? Congrats !!!
There are few things you want to know before travelling, though.
Here are some tips which are recommendations based on my own personal experiences. This list will is not final yet and will be extended. You are also more than welcome to add your personal tips and recommendations in the comment section below, which will be helpful for other readers, too.
Enjoy and Buen Viaje !

POWER PLUGS:
The power plugs and socket here in the Dominican Republic (DR) are the same as the ones in the US, they are of type A and B. The standard voltage is 110 V and the standard frequency is 60 Hz.

MOSQUITO SPRAYS:
Definitely a must !! Though I rather recommend you to get the local mosquito spray, especially these are the most popular and effective ones:
Off Spray

WATER :
Tab water in the DR is NOT DRINKING WATER !!
It depends on your mindset or the sensitivity also, but I usually have no problem using it for brushing my teeth or washing my hands before applying contact lenses. I also use it for gurgle. However it is not meant for drinking, so if you want to wash salad or fruits with it, or making hot tea, it is recommended to use bottled water.

TOILET:
In the DR most toilets are not meant to flush away toilet papers.
That is why you will find trash bins next to the toilets usually.
In some rare cases such as high standard hotels or AirBnB you might be able to flush toilet papers, but please check that beforehand with the owner or the reception.
In general it is advised to ALWAYS throw it away in the trash bin.
Also you want to get used to the idea that clean and functioning toilets are not always easy to find :)

UBER :
You’ll be surprised how well developed Uber service is here, way more than other places such as Germany lol. So far I could find services in Santo Domingo, Santiago, even Cabarete. Also long distances such as from Santo Domingo to Juan Dolio can be made by Uber. The prices are extremely low which is convenient for the tourists, however you want to be careful as they sometimes try to negotiate outside of the original price in the application due to the increasing gas prices. This happened to me 3 times, so much so that they even prefer cancelling on you. In some places they also want you to pay cash instead of credit card. Just be aware that it won’t be very smooth to order a Uber depending on where you are for these cases. All in all it’s extremely convenient and useful and way cheaper than the usual taxis, especially coming from the Las Americas Airport.
